What They Are
Links are divine constructs created by Hephaestus and a cadre of lesser gods and former Titans. They appear as small objects (roughly an inch wide) typically shaped like Mobius strips, though size and shape vary considerably due to Hephaestus's lack of interest in standardization. Each Link is infused with divine magic that allows it to defy conventional physics and serve as both energy source and universal currency.
How They Work
Links function as batteries for heat energy with extraordinarily low entropy. The process:
- Apply minor heat (a flame, friction, mechanical pump) to prime the Link
- The Link begins spinning rapidly, levitating in the air
- The spinning Link can be harnessed multiple ways:
- In a chamber: The Link radiates heat, which reflects back, creating perpetual motion. Excess heat can be siphoned with water (similar to nuclear reactor cooling)
- Direct electrical generation: The rapid spin creates electrical current, allowing Links to power small electronics like batteries
- Steam generation: When combined with D.E.W., Links create massive steam pressure for large-scale power
- Light production: Spinning Links emit light as a byproduct, which can be amplified with mirrors and lenses for lamps, streetlights, and handheld lighting devices
Energy Output
A single Link provides approximately 10,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) before depletion. Actual output varies based on:
- The Link's individual characteristics (Hephaestus's inconsistent creation process)
- The efficiency of the mechanism harnessing its power
- How the Link is primed and maintained
Depletion & Lifespan
Links deplete slowly but cannot be recharged. The depletion process:
- Early-to-mid depletion (100% to ~5%): No visible signs of depletion. The Link appears and functions normally, making this the window where unscrupulous traders can pass off depleted Links as full-value.
- Near-total depletion (~5% to 0%): The Link becomes less effective, spins slower, and its red hue tarnishes noticeably.
- Fully depleted: The Link turns deep maroon and becomes fragile (can be smashed like glass). At this point, it's essentially worthless.
The "Link Reader" Industry
Because early depletion shows no signs, an entire industry has emerged claiming to measure Link energy before visible depletion appears. Methods include:
- Ritualistic inspection
- Gemstone-like examination techniques
- Complex inventions measuring charge or spin
None of these methods are accurate. They exist primarily to provide peace of mind to buyers and create an illusion of expertise. The only reliable indicator is the visible tarnishing that appears when Links are nearly worthless anyway.
Creation & Supply Chain
Creation: Links are manufactured on Mercury by a specialized cadre working under Hephaestus's loose supervision:
- Hephaestus: Oversees the entire operation but rarely creates Links himself, focusing instead on training and high-level decisions. When he does forge Links personally, they're considered the finest quality.
- The Three Cyclopes (Brontes, Steropes, Arges): Master smiths who serve as Hephaestus's primary Link creators, each specializing in different aspects:
- Brontes (Thunder): Creates Links optimized for heat generation
- Steropes (Lightning): Forges Links with superior electrical current output
- Arges (Brightness): Produces Links prized for their light emission
The Cyclopes work independently with considerable skill, though ancient tensions with Apollo (stemming from his killing of their sons in revenge for Asclepius's death) occasionally surface in subtle ways that complicate distribution politics. - Hyperion: Released from Tartarus specifically to assist with Link production. His Links are particularly lauded for producing exceptional lumens, making them highly sought after for lighting applications. "Hyperion Links" command premium value for streetlights and important illumination needs.
- The Telchines: Daemon-smiths who serve the crucial but unglamorous role of gathering raw materials. They dive through Mercury's thin crust, collecting magma, rock, and ice from the poles needed for Link creation. In emergencies, the Telchines can forge Links themselves, though these are generally considered the lowest quality and used only when supply becomes desperate.
This hierarchy creates natural variation in Link quality and characteristics. Hephaestus doesn't track production numbers and has no interest in standardization or management: he trains his assistants, gives them orders, and lets them work independently.
Distribution: The Diadochoi Olympians (the Twelve ruling from Olympus Nesos) technically control distribution, but they're hamstrung by Hephaestus's sporadic and inefficient production rate.
Naming Politics: What you call the governing body reveals your politics:
- "The Diadochoi Olympians" (formal/full title): Used by traditionalists, official documents, and those emphasizing continuity with divine heritage
- "The Olympians": Progressive/respectful shorthand, suggesting they've earned the title and represent legitimate Olympian authority
- "Diadochoi" (title without "Olympians"): Snide/derogatory, implies they're merely successors without true authority
The result of Hephaestus's production issues:
- Massive backlog of requests from settlements across the Kosmos
- No sense of urgency from Hephaestus to increase production
- Political intrigue and backchannel deals around Link allocation
- Requestors asking for more Links than they need (knowing supply is limited)
Current State: The civilization has reached an equilibrium where Link creation roughly matches consumption for existing infrastructure, but new projects stagnate due to lack of available Links. Innovation focuses on more efficient ways to harness Link power rather than expanding infrastructure.
Counterfeiting & Fraud
Links cannot be counterfeited as their creation requires divine touch. Some inventors have attempted to recreate them, but all have failed.
However, a form of fraud exists: trading depleted Links as full-value. Since Links show no visible depletion until ~5% capacity, unscrupulous traders can pass off heavily used Links at their full worth. This makes the "Link reader" industry valuable despite its ineffectiveness.
Practical Use & Handling
Carrying: Links can be carried like coins, with the caution that excessive heat will cause them to begin emitting energy. Some wealthy cultures (Europa, Calliope) wear Links as jewelry to display wealth.
Applications:
- Small devices: Links power handheld electronics and tools (similar to AA batteries) for several hours per priming
- Lighting: Spinning Links emit light that can be focused with mirrors and lenses into lamps, streetlights, and flashlights
- Large infrastructure: Multiple Links in specialized chambers power entire settlements through heat generation and steam systems
- Currency: Links serve as universal currency across the Kosmos, following standard supply/demand economics
Ultimate Fate: All Links eventually end up either:
- In generators powering cities, towns, and settlements
- In individual devices (tools, weapons, small electronics, lighting)
