Magic & Technology

Magic Creating Technology

Magic and technology are not opposites in Progeny's universe because the divine power often creates or enhances technological systems. Sometimes the most advanced "technology" is actually divine magic doing the heavy lifting:

Example: Luna's Domed Cities When mortals needed habitable spaces on Luna, Athena used her divine power to "comb through history" and erect functional domed structures. She provided the framework through magic, and mortals handle the maintenance through engineering. This pattern repeats throughout the Kosmos: the gods create infrastructure that would be impossible through purely mortal means, then step back and let mortals maintain it.

The Pattern:

  • Gods can do essentially anything but are mostly too lazy to do everything
  • They provide major infrastructure (atmospheric systems, foundational buildings, terraforming)
  • Mortals develop technology to maintain and expand what gods create
  • The line between "magical construction" and "advanced technology" is often meaningless

Electricity & The Zeus Split

Electricity occupies a unique space in Progeny's technology, viewed as quasi-magical by most of the population.

The Zeus Split: When Zeus tore Jupiter apart, his consciousness split into:

  • Jove (the ego-driven personality)
  • Keraunousia, the primordial embodiment of electricity (scattered throughout existence)
    • Pronunciation: keh-row-NOO-see-ah (stress on NOO)
    • Abbreviation: The Nous (rhymes with "goose")

Cultural Understanding & Word Choice: Most people believe that working electricity is blessed or sustained by Keraunousia. This creates both a spectrum of belief and linguistic variation based on context and worldview:

Formal/Religious Contexts: "Keraunousia" (scholars, priests, official documents)

  • Used by those who view electricity as divine essence
  • Electronics literally run on the primordial being's scattered power
  • The formal name acknowledges the sacred nature of the force

Everyday Conversation: "the Nous" (what 99% of people actually say)

  • Practical shorthand used across all belief systems
  • Most people fall somewhere in between religious and secular views. To them using electricity feels like tapping into a god, even if they don't fully believe it
  • Common phrases: "Blessed by the Nous" (when electricity works), "The Nous provides" (when a device powers on), "Nous-touched" (for particularly reliable electrical systems)

Secular/Scientific Contexts: Often avoid both terms when possible

  • Those who view electricity as pure technology/science
  • May reluctantly use "the Nous" in casual conversation but avoid religious terminology
  • Prefer technical descriptions: "electrical current," "power systems," etc.

Technology Limitations

The Kosmos is technology-lite for several reasons:

  1. Knowledge Loss: Most technical expertise died with Gaia
  2. Infrastructure Collapse: The knowledge and systems needed to mass-produce complex electronics are gone
  3. Cultural Shift: Steam power and mechanical systems proved more practical for rebuilding civilization

What exists:

  • Recovered electronics from Gaia (limited, often repurposed)
  • Common handheld devices (flashlights, basic tools) often with Link/D.E.W. modifications
  • Link-powered lighting (spinning Links emit light, amplified with mirrors and lenses)
  • No computers, no electronic communication networks
  • Light primarily from Link-powered lamps, plus traditional burning (torches, candles, oil lamps)

Divine Power vs. Mortal Technology

Gods:

  • Don't require D.E.W. or Links
  • Can interact with, enhance, and break technology at will
  • Can do essentially anything but are mostly too lazy to do everything
  • Divine blessings/boons are pure magic, channeled through mortals

Mortals:

  • Can only perform one type of "magic": Astral Projection (see below)
  • Must rely on technology (Links, D.E.W., mechanical systems) for everything else
  • Cannot cast spells, perform rituals for magical effects, or directly manipulate divine energy
  • Rely on divine blessings for any supernatural abilities beyond astral projection
