Origins

Gigantes represent Ares' vision of perfect warriors, created through genetic enhancement. Named after ancient giants who fought the gods, they reflect Ares' romantic nostalgia for those legendary enemies. He always admired their strength and cunning, even while plotting their destruction.

The truth of their creation remains a dark secret. During the First Wave, Ares discovered a Mars research colony of approximately 200 human scientists, utterly baffled by Earth's sudden communication silence and the appearance of a Greek god offering rescue. Rather than report this finding, Ares recognized an opportunity: an isolated population he could shape according to his vision. This colony became his secret laboratory, the original genetic stock for what would become the Gigantes lineage. Over centuries, as the original bloodlines diluted, Ares has supplemented his breeding program with pure Prometheans from across the Kosmos, maintaining the genetic foundation his enhancements require.

The Gigantes themselves know nothing of this origin. They believe, and are told, that they were directly discended from Ares, taking immense pride in their supposed divine lineage. This belief forms the cornerstone of their identity, though the reality involves considerably more genetic manipulation of kidnapped populations than their origin stories suggest.

The enhancement process grants superior abilities at the cost of deliberately shortened lifespans. Ares programmed this limitation not from cruelty, but from strategic foresight: veterans who live long enough to accumulate wisdom might start asking uncomfortable questions about the system. Most die just as they develop serious doubts, ensuring knowledge is constantly lost before it can be shared.

Form & Function

Gigantes appear indistinguishable from enhanced Prometheans, displaying peak human physical development. Their only distinctive features are elaborate tattoos covering their bodies in patterns resembling battle paint or tribal markings. These tattoos serve multiple functions: marking unit affiliations, recording significant victories, honoring Ares through symbolic imagery, and concealing scarring from genetic enhancement procedures. When fully clothed, they can pass as Prometheans, though their bearing invariably suggests extensive military training and barely contained violence.

Lifespan: Gigantes live only 40 base years due to genetic modifications. Additional Years = (Immortal Heritage Fraction x 200). Such bloodlines are uncommon due to their origins as enhanced pure Prometheans. This shortened lifespan creates cyclical patterns where most return to Mars during breeding periods to ensure population stability.

Reproduction: They reproduce with all lineages, though partnerships with other Gigantes receive heavy encouragement through social pressure. Children of two Gigantes inherit full modifications and are immediately transferred to training facilities. Parents may never see them again, preventing awkward family dynamics that might interfere with arena combat. All children are raised communally from birth until drafted into units. This systematic separation ensures parental bonds never develop, making duty-based culture possible and preventing family loyalties from complicating arena matches between relatives.

Their enhanced physiology includes heightened aggression, channeled into focused warrior mentality rather than destructive rage. They form intense bonds with unit members, understanding that success depends on both collective performance and marketability in an entertainment system valuing spectacle as much as skill.

Almost all Gigantes are involved at some point in the planet-wide dispute resolution system, Arbitrations, which operates as a sports entertainment empire centered around competitive combat units. Unit loyalty supersedes broader solidarity, creating a fractured society where teammates are everything and everyone else is competition. Different units view each other as competitors and enemies, creating scenarios where parents may face their own children across arena sand without recognizing them. This isn't tragic accident but deliberate design: Ares ensures loyalty never extends beyond unit boundaries.

But not all Gigantes are drafted into units. Some fail to qualify, sustain career-ending injuries, or age out of active combat. These often transition to supportive roles within Mars's Arbitration infrastructure or seek lives elsewhere. Professional couriers frequently employ retired Gigantes as security, leveraging their combat expertise for protection and conflict resolution.

Other lineages view them with mixture of respect, wariness, and entertainment appreciation. Their reputation as supreme warriors makes them valuable legal representatives and intimidating opponents, while their gladiatorial roles create celebrity culture around successful units complete with fan followings and merchandise sales.

Naming Conventions

Format: Single-Syllable Name or Single-Syllable Name "Appellation"

Gigantes receive a single short name at birth in the communal training facilities of Valles Marineris. One syllable, sometimes two. Hard consonants preferred. Rex. Bron. Val. Kade. Tyr. These names are assigned, not chosen. They're functional labels for children who will never know their parents, given by trainers who process dozens of newborns per cycle. Sentimentality is not part of the vocabulary.

The appellation is everything. Earned through distinguished performance in Arbitrations, an appellation transforms a Gigantes from a name on a roster to a name worth remembering. Rex "Ironbreaker." Val "Ashborn." Kade "the Redcrest." Appellations are declared by unit commanders, ratified by arena officials, and spread through the psychoseira performance troupes that broadcast Arbitration results across the Kosmos. A strong appellation can make a Gigantes famous beyond Mars. A Gigantes without one is just a first name: functional, forgettable, and acutely aware of the gap.

The social pressure is deliberate and brutal. Unappellated Gigantes occupy a lower rung in a culture that measures worth through combat achievement. They eat last, bunk worst, and get passed over for high-profile Arbitration assignments. Some spend their entire compressed lifespans chasing an appellation that never comes. Veterans who wash out of active combat and transition to courier security or settlement work carry their appellations with them as proof they mattered once, or carry the absence as a wound that doesn't close.
