Flickers

Flickers

"We are one, we are many, we are the echo of what was and the whisper of what might be." — Final-freeze-of-joy (Fre-joy), Flicker tableau master

Origins

Flickers originate from the three Hecatoncheires (hundred-handed, fifty-headed primordial giants) whose legendary anatomy was actually quantum mechanics that ancient mythology lacked the scientific vocabulary to describe properly. They existed simultaneously across multiple dimensional states, appearing as overlapping forms to observers who probably assumed they were seeing things.

After Zeus freed them to defeat the Titans, they were eventually exiled to Enceladus where they entered suspended animation within ice for eons. During The Discord period, when Phosina was developing her terraforming gifts by listening to worlds and coaxing forth their potential, she discovered them on the icy moon. Her routine terraforming surveys detected impossible quantum signatures that demanded investigation: the kind of readings that make scientists either very excited or very worried.

Using her lunaforming expertise, Phosina created precise conditions to safely revive these ancient beings without accidentally creating a dimensional catastrophe. Upon awakening, she helped them adapt to the modern Kosmos and assisted in their propagation, earning their eternal gratitude and the title of beloved mother despite no biological connection. Phosina maintains a small settlement on Enceladus as their cultural home base, serving as both sanctuary and collaborative research center. For beings who exist in multiple dimensions simultaneously, having a single stable anchor point proves surprisingly important.

Form & Function

Flickers appear as ethereal humanoid forms existing simultaneously in multiple quantum states, creating an effect like viewing someone through overlapping afterimages. To observers, they look like multiple transparent versions occupying slightly different positions, creating flowing, shimmering effects. Their features shift and flow as quantum states fluctuate, giving them an otherworldly, dreamlike quality that maintains recognizable humanoid structure while existing in several places at once.

Despite their ethereal appearance, they maintain solid physical contact with objects and beings. However, their shifting nature makes them slightly clumsy. They often drop things when distracted, as consciousness phases between dimensional states at inconvenient moments.

Lifespan: Flickers live 200 base years enhanced by immortal heritage. Additional Years = (Immortal Heritage Fraction x 200). Their primordial nature grants extended lifespans, though quantum fluctuations affect aging patterns in ways that make determining their actual age an exercise in applied mathematics.

Reproduction: They reproduce with all lineages through quantum mechanics that create memorable experiences for everyone involved. Children with divine parents inherit Theogen eyes. Children of Flickers with human-appearing lineages appear human but display visual echoes: apparent multiple limbs or heads that shift in and out of perception. Pure Flicker children inherit full quantum nature, appearing as ethereal as their parents from birth. Family structures center on preserving ancient memories through tableau traditions, creating strong intergenerational bonds despite their tendency to disperse across the Kosmos.

Natural Abilities:

  • Simultaneous existence across multiple quantum states
  • Brief phase shifting into single states (lasting only seconds)
  • Enhanced problem-solving through multi-dimensional perspective
  • Intuitive glimpses of alternative realities and possibilities
  • Natural resistance to quantum-based effects and dimensional instabilities
  • Unique tableau performance art preserving ancient memories

Limitations:

  • Slight clumsiness due to quantum state fluctuations
  • Cannot maintain single-state phase for extended periods
  • Overwhelming sensory input when focusing on alternative realities
  • Physical appearance can be disorienting to unfamiliar observers
  • Difficulty with tasks requiring sustained single-dimensional focus
  • Vulnerability to quantum disruption fields or dimensional anchoring

Mind & Society

Flicker psychology operates across multiple dimensional perspectives simultaneously, providing unique insight into possibilities that single-state beings cannot perceive. Their consciousness naturally processes multiple potential realities, making them excellent problem-solvers who see solutions others miss, though explaining those solutions can prove challenging.

Despite quantum complexity, their subjective experience feels relatively normal to them. They can focus their minds to glimpse alternative realities or potential futures, providing intuitive guidance that proves remarkably accurate, though extensive use can be overwhelming in ways that are difficult to describe to anyone existing in only one dimension.

They don't form large permanent communities, preferring integration into diverse cultures while maintaining heritage through private family practices. The tableau tradition serves as their primary cultural bond: families gather periodically to share ancient stories through quantum freeze-frame performances. These dances appear as staccato movements creating crystalline moments that preserve historical memory in ways no other lineage can replicate, functioning as both art form and library.

As master storytellers, they maintain the most complete ancient tales learned directly from the original Hecatoncheires. However, this knowledge remains private heritage rather than professional craft. Some stories are too old and strange to share with those who exist in only one dimension at a time.

Naming Conventions

Format: Descriptive Compound -> shortened form

Flicker children go unnamed for the first decade of life, a period that constitutes infancy given their extended lifespans. Until then, they are simply "Child of parent name." The name arrives through a ceremony called a Phainomenon (fye-NOM-eh-non, "that which appears"): each parent performs a solo tableau, the quantum freeze-frame dance that is the Flickers' most sacred art form, while a circle of elders, usually family, observes. Each parent dances what they perceive of the child independently, and the elders interpret the overlapping crystalline moments to synthesize a name from the intersection. Flickers are surprisingly open about who dances. Mixed-lineage parents are welcomed and expected to contribute even if they can't perform a true quantum tableau. What a single-state being sees in their child reveals things a multi-dimensional observer might miss, and the contrast between parents' dances often produces the most interesting names.

The result is a descriptive compound reflecting the child's perceived essence across dimensional states: Echo-Between, Shimmer-at-Dusk, Weight-of-Laughter, Thread-Across. These names carry layered meaning accessible only to beings who perceive multiple realities simultaneously. "Echo-Between" doesn't just mean "an echo between things." It describes a specific quality of existing in the liminal space between quantum states that the rest of the Kosmos can observe but never fully understand. The names are poetry in a language most people can only partly read.

In daily life, the full tableau name compresses into a phonetic shorthand: Echo-Between becomes "E-bet." Shimmer-at-Dusk becomes "Shad." Weight-of-Laughter becomes "Wela." The short form is what the wider world uses. The full name is family, shared with close friends and partners as an act of intimacy. Asking a Flicker their tableau name before it's offered marks you as someone who doesn't understand boundaries.

Examples: Still-Before-Thunder "Sbet", Fold-of-Silence "Fosa", Warm-Beneath-Falling "Wabe", Light-Against-Current "Lac", Catch-in-Amber "Cia"
