Eclipsed

Eclipsed

"We are the broken mirror that still reflects truth, just from angles others cannot see." — Eclipsed poet Vex'andra

Origins

The Eclipsed emerged from Athena's catastrophic attempt to resurrect Gaia. The ritual shattered Gaia's death-spirit into thousands of fragments that latched onto Luna settlers' souls, fundamentally altering how they perceive reality. Rather than creating madness, these spiritual fragments produced something like cosmic neurodiversity: minds that process the intersection of physical and astral reality in ways others simply cannot comprehend.

The condition proved genetic, passing through bloodlines as naturally as eye color. Athena, paralyzed by this catastrophic failure, cannot undo her mistake. Divine power, it turns out, comes with a strict no-returns policy. She remains trapped in endless theoretical planning about how she might help the Eclipsed, occasionally managing quiet assistance when her paralysis permits, but mostly drowning in strategic overthinking about a problem she created but cannot solve.

Form & Function

Eclipsed appear fully human but exhibit subtle tells that mark their spiritual condition. Their eyes occasionally lose focus, seeming to look through people as they involuntarily perceive astral plane activity invisible to everyone else. When processing complex information, they unconsciously trace patterns in the air, drawing connections in ways others cannot access. They run several degrees cooler than normal body temperature without noticing the difference.

Their movements sometimes reflect dual perception: pausing mid-conversation to listen to unheard voices, touching surfaces as if reading invisible information, or gravitating toward certain areas based on spiritual resonance that would make no sense to anyone else. These behaviors fluctuate based on environmental spiritual activity, more pronounced on spiritually active worlds and nearly normal in quiet locations.

Lifespan: Eclipsed live around 120 base years enhanced by immortal heritage. Additional Years = (Immortal Heritage Fraction x 200). Their spiritual condition affects aging patterns; they often appear younger due to constant astral energy flow.

Reproduction: They reproduce with all lineages, though Gaia fragments prove genetically dominant. Children always inherit the spiritual condition regardless of their other parent's lineage. Children with divine parents inherit Theogen eyes, while most appear human with characteristic cooler temperature and unconscious finger-tracing. Family dynamics center on teaching children to navigate unique perceptions while developing coping strategies for overwhelming input.

Natural Abilities:

  • Exceptional astral projection (half their consciousness naturally exists in astral space)
  • Synesthetic spiritual perception that predicts supernatural events
  • Enhanced tracking and detective skills through death-sense
  • Instinctive awareness of spiritual resonance and danger

Limitations:

  • Overwhelming sensory input in spiritually active environments
  • Personality shifts based on planetary spiritual conditions
  • Compulsive behaviors they cannot control or explain satisfactorily
  • Difficulty maintaining focus during intense spiritual activity
  • Social awkwardness from processing additional reality layers

Mind & Society

Eclipsed psychology centers on processing reality through multiple overlapping layers. Their minds naturally bridge physical and spiritual realms, creating thought patterns that seem scattered to others but follow internal logic based on information simply unavailable to single-layer perception.

They experience personality shifts based on planetary environments. Spiritual resonance affects mental state the way weather affects mood, except more dramatically. Environmental sensitivity makes long-distance travel challenging as they adapt to new spiritual "weather patterns" that don't appear on any forecast.

Communities tend toward supportive networks sharing coping strategies, warnings about overwhelming locations, and emotional support during difficult episodes. Competition is rare; their condition creates acute awareness of others' struggles, promoting cooperation over rivalry. Some attempt to suppress their condition while others embrace it as a gift. Most find middle ground, learning to function in typical society while privately honoring their unique capabilities.

Other lineages sense something "different" without being able to identify specific reasons. Their occasional unfocused expressions and unconscious gestures create subtle unease in some while attracting others who appreciate unconventional perspectives. Widespread superstition attributes "bad luck" to their presence, though this stems from being present during significant events rather than causing them. They form majority populations on Luna where astral projection mastery proves invaluable for navigation and communication.

Naming Conventions

Format: Rearranged/Broken Human Name

Eclipsed naming reflects what happened to them: ordinary human names, shattered and reassembled at wrong angles. When Athena's failed ritual broke Gaia's death-spirit into fragments that lodged in Luna settlers' souls, it didn't just alter their perception. It altered how their communities related to identity itself. Over generations, Eclipsed families began giving children names built from fractured versions of common human names: syllables rearranged, sounds displaced, familiar names made subtly alien.

Alexandra becomes Vex'andra. Theodore becomes Dor'etheo. Cassandra becomes San'dacra. Nikolaos becomes Kol'anios. The apostrophe marks the fracture point, the place where the name broke and was reassembled. It's pronounced as a glottal stop with a slight "uh" sound, a deliberate vocal hitch that emphasizes the split: Vex-uh-andra, Dor-uh-etheo. The pause is subtle but unmistakable, a tiny catch in the throat that sounds like a name stumbling over its own broken seam. Other lineages sometimes try to smooth it out when addressing Eclipsed, eliding the stop into something more comfortable. Most Eclipsed notice. Some correct you. Others just file it away.

This convention serves as both cultural identity and quiet defiance. Eclipsed didn't choose their condition, but they've claimed it. Their names say: we were human, something broke us, and we rebuilt ourselves from the pieces. Not every Eclipsed follows the tradition rigidly. Some on Luna use conventional names in professional settings, switching to their fractured name among family. But the convention is widespread enough that hearing an apostrophe-split name in a crowded market immediately signals who you're dealing with.

Eclipsed carry only the single fractured name. No surnames, no epithets. One name is enough when it already contains the ghost of another.

Examples: Phy'loran, Dem'itria, Andro'kael, Hel'enais, Thas'sophi, Nik'omache

Lineage Talents

Astral Sense

Passive: +1 Zeal maximum. You can sense anomalies, spiritual presence, and communication in the astral plane within your zone, manifesting as synesthetic impressions. You are never surprised by threats originating from the astral plane.
You perceive spiritual phenomena through synesthetic senses: colors you can taste, odors you can feel, whispers you can smell, textures you can hear.
Astral Projection

Passive: You know the Astral Projection talent from the Ether domain. This talent counts as a talent from the Ether domain for prerequisite purposes.
Half your consciousness already drifts through the astral plane. Projecting the rest requires no more effort than closing your eyes.
